I have had Iris' for years and have never had this grow from the top of them after they were done blooming. Can you please tell me what it is and what I should do with it?

I cut it open and this is what the inside looks like.

that's an unripened seed head

Seed pods turn brown & start to crack open when they are ripe. The unripened ones can be discarded.

Thank you so much!! I had never seen them before. I guess the one I cut open won't be any good now, HUH?

Right--but keep your eye open for others as you seem to have busy bees.

I have about 7 of these pods right now, like I said this is the first year that I have seen these on the Iris plants. Will they just open and self seed or is there something that I need to do to them?

Collect them as they open as irises don't come true from seed and could cause confusion in your planting. They can be dried & then kept in envelopes to be planted later. If you don't want them after drying, give them to a friend.

Thank you so much!!
