Using a resin coating for a smooth mosaic surface

Has anyone ever used a resin type coating that is poured on a completed mosaic to create a smooth surface? If so, can you explain how this is done, what product is used and any tips for getting the best smooth surface?

Here is an example, but it seems very messy and very time consuming.
