Can I cut them back? some of them look pretty ratty from all the storms. and their done blooming now. would it be ok to cut them back?
kathy
When their done blooming
You can certainly cut the bloom-stalks off. Some people do shorten leaves, usually with a diagonal or upside-down V shape, but usually that is after transplanting. Just keep in mind that the food for next year's flowers comes from the photosynthesis of all of this year's leaves, so cutting them back significantly could mean fewer flowers next year. If they really look bad, though, that may be worth it. You won't kill them by cutting back a bit.
ok, I'll probablyjust cut the bloom stalks down then
Cut any dead stuff off the leaves to is fine to prevent disease, just do not cut the green part feeding the rhizomes for next year.
