Faux Stained Glass for Pre-Teens

Hello!

I work at a summer camp and hold the title of Middle School Craft Queen. This summer I am trying to come up with a sophisticated project for our rising 6th through 8th graders. I had thought of doing stained glass on plexiglass due to my budget. Can you suggest some good paints that would dry translucent for the stained glass effect? Again, I am working on a budget but it's not too frugal. Also, are there any general how-tos that I should know?

I saw a few of y'alls projects and they are all beautiful.
