what's munching on my hydrangea?

I just planted 4 hydrangrea bushes. There is now only 1 left with leaves on it.(forgot to take pic, it's a little late to take one now)
What the heck ate it, ya think???rabbits? I spread some cayenne pepper today to save the last one, we'll see what happens in the morn.

Just the leaves and green stems.

Meant to say "leaves" not "leave"

So I put some cayenne pepper around my new gardens and it had saved my last hydrangea for a while, but with all the rain....last hydrangea leaves got eaten. NUTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Does Liquid fence last thru rain??
