Second half of the day has been great. 71 and mostly sunny now.
Today's Weather in Your Garden - 19
Goldfinch.
Thought so - thanks, Lynn!
Supposed to be dry here tomorrow. Hope so & the dear little ticks can disappear also. I had 2 last week, luckily still crawling.
Don't count on that! They're here until the cold weather.
Cute goldfinch Victor! The afternoon was sunny and nice, did a lot of work in the corner garden today, will post a pic when it's a little further along. Tomorrow supposed to be nice in am, going to golf, then garden more.
When the sun came out this afternoon, I went walking in White's Woods--a vast amount of protected land in Litchfield---saw many birds, but nothing rare--will remember to leave the pointer home next time--she either yanked the leash or whined every time I put up the binocs. It felt strange not having to babysit. Yesterday, HayHay wanted to plant pumpkins--did not care about cold & rain--so we planted them in a container, along with herbs, in the kitchen. Today, I bought many annuals--I, too, wanted to plant, but restrained myself--guess Hay has some of my genes!
Woke up to drizzle and rain when we got out of church and it was absolutely gorgeous. Got to 73 degrees today.
Chilly, yesterday but spent 3 1/2 hours hauling dirt and planting seeds.
I couldn't believe when the sun came out, I wasn't home in my yard! I did spend some quality time at a nursery though.
Victor - did you know that Gold Finches are one of the only birds that molt twice. The males molt now for breeding and then again at the end of the summer. At that point they look more like the females again.
A question about crocosmia bulbs.
I know this is the weather thread but the question is about cold weather.
I planted crocosmia bulbs a month ago ,around April5. There is nothing showing.
Was the ground too cold?
Where is Mr.Crocosmia these days? did he say he was traveling?
Hi JoAnn
My crocosmia that I planted 2 years ago have not shown yet, so maybe they are just waiting for it to warm up a little more. But I've only had them in my garden for a couple years, so I don't know for sure.
Hi debilu, did your internet and cable dissapear yesterday?
Ours was out from 5:00AM to 7:00PM.
Thought I would go mad.
I didn't realize how much I depend on the internet.
I watched movies "Pride and Prejudice" and " Sense and Sensability" Good thing I own them.
JoAnn, I don't think we had any problems, I was out most of the day, don't remember what time I came in and checked DG, but it was ok when I did. I know, I miss chatting with everyone here when I'm away for a few days.
JoAnn - Mr. C. is no longer a subscriber to DG.
Too bad he was so much fun.
No sign of crocosmia from last year here yet either. Sun should be up and out today at last. The temp is a chilly 38 and I am hoping for it to finally get out of the low 40s after a couple of raw cold days.
Joann two good movies to have to pass the time. I have all of the PBS movies of Jane Austin stories. P &P is my fav and I three different versions of that one.
I have the newest P&P with Kira Knightly as well as the BBC 6 hour version with Colin Ferth.
I was about to start Bleak House, when Cable et al started.
Maybe we should take this topic up in a new thread "What Gardeners like to watch"
LOL
Victor, I think you got the weather yesterday that I wanted, no fair. Nice picture.
docgipe, I willl be a fan of your pumpkin. Mine have germinated, but no special efforts for ours other than just wild cheering as they take over the back hill, hopefully.
44 and no sign of sun in Nantucket. It has been soooooooooooo grey for days, but it is warming up to high 50's today with less wind. I did manage to get all the roses planted yesterday except two that I need to hold off on until we get the new fence put up dispite the rain and cold. Hated it, but "gotter done". I also planted lots of Lilies from Faraway coop. So I am au courant with my planting that can be done. I am expecting another 9 roses from Dan this week plus a Big dipper order and one from Rick's.
I moved the three azalea's that the deer had been ravaging and planted more viburnums and a few other things. I divided some perennials which I love doing to increase several patches of Achillea and Alchemilla and Polygonum Bistorta which reappeared after disappearing for years. It is weedy and my be a problem down the road. I did a lot of weeding in the paths. I moved a few plants around that I thought deserved a better spot. I even moved some blooming narcissus. I doubt they will notice. I have some "bad" combo's in the tulip world which I will move today. Ruthless, but if I don't they will come up again next year and I will be more annoyed. How can a tulip be discribed in a catalog as "red" and be a ravishingly neon pink? Same with lilies. Annoying. I should learn.
I love Avant as they sent me three great bonus plants. Plants I actually would want. They must have looked at my previous orders to decide of what I would want. One was Viburnum 'Diana' and the other spirea 'White Gold' plus a little sedum 'Isle of Sakhalin'. I planted a nice 8' Hammeralis, after moving a viburnum over about 10 feet that I had planted a couple of weeks ago as it was a better spot for the witch hazel. Musical plants !
Big news is that my 25 yards of mulch will be arriving this morning. Out to do some more preparation for the big dump. Have a good one all even if it is gray, damp and yucky. Patti
52, sunny, not a cloud to be seen. Going to 65 today. I'll wish it comes your way, Patti.
I'll be out by 8 AM, thrilled to be packaging in the sun!
Pirl, What are you packaging up for your garden today? Gift wrapping is going beyond the call of duty. Mine go in as is, no fancy ribbon or paper here. I am jealous of your weather, send it east, please. Patti
Thank you Anita - did not know that about the finches. Pretty cool. Wow - busy day, Patti. The deer just nibbled some azalea for the first time. Sounds like more busy times for you this week. How is the pond / stream?
Packaging for a big trade, Patti. Looks like multiple large boxes but that's fine with me since the person is the best trader ever on DG and has blessed me with so many wonderful plants. I could rave on about how wonderful the trades have been for an hour and it still wouldn't be sufficient to express my appreciation. When both people feel they've benefited most from the trades then it's a wonderful experience.
Forgot to say - 47 and brilliant sun.
43 right now with partly cloudy skie....should reach to 62 and be sunny this afternoon.
Headed to the ER with DS...he had a seizure and landed on his hand...it's turning very black, hope it's not broke!!!!!!!

Jo Ann - we did do a thread a few months back on favorite TV shows.
Before me.
I was feeling a bit guilty getting into NETFLIX rentals and
Jane Austen.
I have a hard time getting around so I ned some chair time inbetween garden stuff.
Nice shot pirl! ☺
Good luck at the ER, Celeste. Hope it's not too bad.
Good luck with DS and the ER. Hope it is just a sprain and or bruise. Not a fun trip to have to make, hope all ends well.
Today in gorgeous in our N.H. garder almost cried when I had to leave for work.Last week the first two deliveries of plants arrived Bluestone and High Country all plants looked fine after their journey. So Saturday was spent out in the cold rain planting all day which was great except for the cold seeping into my bones by days end.The High Country Nursery in N.M. offers and suggest a (tonic) they have to relieve stress when transplanting theirs or any plants.I purchased some and used it and all the new plants look so great no signs of stree at all.Got two real neat collections from High Country ,one was Cacti tolerant of this climate the other suculents,Agave,Yucca etc also with Northeast tolerance. They are so neat hope they do well.
