Tell me it's NOT!

The apple tree is over 40 years old and always produces wonderful apples. Today, as I was spraying a light oil spray, I saw THESE! Scale, right? How and Why now and never before? More importantly, how to rid. There are only a few stems affected

Yup, it's scale:

I searched and they all say to use an oil spray.

I've had luck sometimes dislodging them with a blast from the garden hose. Or you can wipe your (gloved) hand down the branch and dislodge some of them that way too. You'll definitely need to use the oil too, but it's most effective against the crawlers so I've found it helps when I can physically dislodge some of the stationary ones.
