Hellebores, pulmonaria etc

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Here are some of the hellebores from today. Please don't mind the black metal rods in some of the photos. It's a plant stake I used to avoid having my hand in the photo while turning the flowers so I didn't have to lay on the ground! LOL

I took photos of some of the plants too. All of these were selected from the seedling pots at Curt's in the last two years - most of them last year. If they are older than that I'll note it. That way you will know what size plants I have been getting.

Each one has a little something different about it.

This one has pink veins. Here plant #1 flower.

You want to click on each flower to enlarge - hellebores have a lot of subtle detail in color and pattern.

Another bloom of plant #1 to show the dark pink edge

Plant #2

This may be my darkest one. It has a heavy overlay of gray metallic like patina.

This one has very fine spots, like stippling. Love the rose coloring.

Plant #5

This one is one of the bigger ones. I think this is the second year it has bloomed. It is one of the heaviest bloomers I have seen!

I do not care for white flowers, but this is an exception.

The hellebore I brought to the RU last fall for folks to split up was perhaps 4 or 5 times this size! But, I don't think it bloomed this heavy.

Plant #6

This shows some of the leaf types Curt is now working with. This is taken from directly above.

This is a single leaf on plant #6

It's a bit hard to tell in the plant shot what just one leaf looks like

and, the flower on plant #6

This is definitely in the running for my favorite of the ones I grow.

I love the leaves, the color and the shape.

Plant #7

Ric - here's a bit of burgundy starting in the foliage.

Again, the finely cut foliage. Remember, these were not selected - he has some that have very finely cut leaves with many more segments than these.

Two flowers on plant #14.

The one on the left is a fresh bloom, the one on the right is older.

This is another of my favorites

Does anyone recognize this? I don't think it would be a "perennial" - it would be a native of N. Carolina, Virgina etc. mountains. Someone I know was hiking down there in the mountains and loved the foliage and brought some back. It's been living there for several years. Has not spread. Gets a fuzzy flower stalk with little green balls maybe 5/8" wide on the end for a bloom. I will have to post a pic when it blooms.

I know my friend should not have taken it, but since he did, I am glad it's still alive here. The piece my friend kept didn't make it.

Pulmonaria - finally!

This is a deep rose with plain foliage from a friend. I don't think she knows what it is. I have not had it long, and it was very small when I planted it. I am glad it looks like it is going to make it after all.

She also gave me this one.

And, to finish off these pics - Ric here is the pulmonaria you gave me last fall. You said it was french blue or something like that? I wish I had written it down! I see it has a few buds! I am anxious to see what color it is.

Everyone bored with hellebores now?

Athens, OH

Not bored in the least.
Hellebores are amongst my favorite plants and your pics are gorgeous!

The one with the finely divided leaf with burgundy tinging is wonderful!

Oh Jules...thanks for sharing!!! They are all beautiful, but the ones that you state are your favorites, are mine too!

The pulmonaria you got from Ric doesn't look like any of the ones I got from Ric. Soooo Ric, if you have more of that one.....hint, hint... ;o)

That first rose hellebore (#3) is just stunning. I love it.

Sure hope you can make it to the RU!

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b)

The one from me is Pulmonaria longifolia ''Dordogne'' or one of it's hybrids.
The red and plain leaf is definitely Pulmonaria rubra 'Red Start'.
Mine might have died off after 5 years.

Joyce yours has both these, at least, as parentage.

Lovely Hellobores.... just in...I have seed pods!
I especially like # 2, 5 and 6 Hellebores!
