low to mid height Clematis Zone 5

Can anyone suggest a lower growing Clematis? I planted two in a previous garden that were a lovely purple, but I can't remember the variety. I want to grow one on an obelisk.

Rain..any in the group of Raymond Evison's "Patio Collection" would fit the bill...Jeanne

Piilu will do good too it only get about 4 feet tall.

Keene, NH(Zone 5a)

I have a Rooguchi that must be one of the most vigorous clematis in my garden- gets about 5-6 ft tall, and would need a rather tall obelisk- blooms all summer, though. Maybe one that is less robust is better.... but I love that one!

Jeanne, where can you buy those?

JLP...I've searched all the reputable online Nurseries that I buy from and haven't found any of those!!..Don't know why..they were the rage a couple of years ago!!!...Jeanne

They were, Jeanne! I heard Raymond Evison on radio talking about them probably two or three years ago. Maybe the Evison site sells them?

Debbie at Silver Star may carry some of them. She also has some clems she doesn't show on her website, so if you're looking for one you don't see there, e-mail her and she may be able to help you.

I ordered clematis "Ruutel" from Garden Crossings because it's a fairly low grower. I want to grow it up a small tree. They have some other lower growers there as well.

Wow! Thank you all for such great info. I love both websites - always exciting and dangerous to have new ones to shop. Really like all the varieties you mentioned. So many Cletmatis so little space for sunny flowers! Actually the Rooguchi is very similar to the one I had great luck with several years ago.

One of the best places to buy clematis is at Completely Clematis. They're pricey, but their stock is gorgeous, in big pots, ready to flower the first season. I bought a Westerplatte several years ago from them and I was exceptionally pleased. I keep forgetting about them. http://www.clematisnursery.com/

Marmori stays pretty low for me at about 5 feet and it is beautiful, then I think they are all beautiful :-) http://www.clematis.hull.ac.uk/new-clemdetail.cfm?dbkey=279

Regarding Completely Clematis, I did not have a great experience with them. In the end, the plants were okay, though quite over priced for the size of the rootball. Customer service was my real problem. I would purchase from them again if they had something I really wanted, but they wouldn't be my first choice -- just my 2 cents though. They are in the GW and my review is posted there.

I thought they went out of business?
