Would egg shells be beneficial to my soil?

Hammond, LA(Zone 8b)

I know that I will have a ton with Easter coming up. I am guessing that they would help aerate the soil, but would there be any chemical contribution?

Thanks, Jennifer

My understanding is that the egg shells add calcium to the soil, but they need to be rinsed and crushed very finely.

Depending on what you are planting, you could place the crushed egg shells on top of the soil around your peppers, tomatoes, broccoli, and cabbage to deter slugs and cutworms, or in the soil near tomatoes. The extra calcium will help prevent blossom end rot.

You could also add coffee grounds to provide a high content of nitrogen to your garden. Calcium and nitrogen supplements (egg shells and coffee grounds) will help keep your garden soil and plants healthy, but this should be done in late fall or early spring several weeks before planting anything to give it time to break down in the soil.

Hope this helps,
