5th Metatarsil......Broken foot

Claremore, OK(Zone 6a)

Agrrrrrh ! I turned my ankle 2 wks ago and thought it was sprained.

After the swelling went down, I expected it would start feeling better when the sprain began to heal. I could tell the ligaments and tendons involved in the sprain were getting better........ but one little spot on the side of my foot still remained extremely tender.

Finally, I gave in to DH's concern and had an X-Ray. Darned if it wasn't broken after all.

Seems there is a little area of bone on the side of the foot that can be pulled off by the ligament when the ankle is turned to the inside severely. They call it a "Dancers Fracture" as it is common with ballerinas. (I'm way far from being that) hehe.

Mine was completely pulled off, rather than just cracked. Now I get to wear this lovely boot. They will check after 3 weeks to see if it will show any progress to re-attach to the larger portion of the bone.

Anyone have experience with this ? What is the likelyhood of one re-attaching if there is a gap between the 2 pieces of bone...... about 1/8 th inch ? The doctor didn't want to say "surgery" yet...... but wants to see if it can knit back together. But what I'm seeing on the internet, seems to suggest otherwise.

If you've ever had this, or known someone who did...... how did their doctor handle it ?

I'm going to my family doctor........ I wonder if I should go ahead and see an orthopedic specialist. If it is something that requires surgery anyway..... I'd just as soon get it over with , rather than prolong it the 3 weeks......and then still have to have it. It's a bummer having your foot messed up right at the first of Springtime. I've been waiting all winter to be able to get out and enjoy my garden, etc. :-(((
