River Birch question

Slidell, LA(Zone 8b)

Does anyone know if I can build a raised bed near a river birch - roughly 5-8' away from actual tree. Someone told me they thought there might be a problem with covering the roots up or even planting in the "root zone". There are no above ground roots in this area. What is the root zone for a river birch? Can I plan a raised bed in this area? Any shared knowledge appreciated!

Best not to. Most of the roots are within the top 10-20cm of soil, and they need access to aerated soil and rainfall.

Tree root zones extend roughly about as far in radius from the trunk, as the tree is tall. So a ten metre tall tree has a roughly ten metre radius root zone.
