First planting into strawbale

Tonto Basin, AZ

12 happy looking lil broc plants that went into two bales yesterday. The other two bales will probably have tomatoes. The bales are on bare soil enclosed in lumber with plastic around the sides to mitigate water loss from the low humidity & high heat here. They're 110 lb 38" x 14" x 22", positioned string up because I felt they'd be too deep with the strings on the side.

So far, so good.

Frank: looking good. How are you going to secure your tomatoes?

Frank,
I'll be watching to see how your bales do over summer. Some of us in Tucson and Phoenix tried them over the winter and I had a pretty good crop of broccoli, lettuce, and spinach.
And the spent bales made a great mulch for my fruit trees.

Those look so nice. Good for you Frank. If you plant more bales be sure to put the string side up anyway. Takes too much water the other way.

Orienting these large bales with strings around the outside would result in a 22" deep straw bed, which seemed excessive. Good to know about the water - always a prime consideration out here.
