My favorite is Negritianka - well I also love Proteus.
I love the purple Solina. I just got it last season and it is a real bloom machine for me.

Not sure the variety of this clematis. Picture taken at the Oregon Gardens in Silverton last Mothers Day. Will bring a note pad & pen next visit and start writing names down when I see something I must have. Very frustrating!! Must have this one as soon as I can identify it... beautiful. pedal spread was 5-6 inches wide.

That's gorgeous.
Fairly new to DG, I've been lurking!!
First time for clematis, please answer I planted Proteus on south side of house, will get some late afternoon sun. is this enough? Also the area stays damp. Should I move it to a different location with more sun and less dampness?
Thanks for your help
Welcome stinky! I don't know about the conditions for your Proteus. Mine gets sun pretty much all day and stays moist but not wet. It might bloom less in a shady situation, I don't know. Not much help but I wanted to welcome you.
Welcome to DG Stinky and the Clematis Forum..Clematis "Proteus" is known to fade so you have little sun sounds ok to me...you are in a cooler zone than me with less sun intensity so clematis most probably can take more sun in your zone!!...They like to stay moist so your spot sounds great...Jeanne
I did not know clematis could/would rebloom. Is there a timing issue re: "extra" pruning to make this occur? Cut it back after blooming? How much? thanks
No need to prune back the pruning group 2's such as "Proteus"..they will bloom in Spring and again in Late Summer/Early Fall..just fertilize after their first bloom cycle is over with either Rose or Tomato Fertilizer..as long as the Middle "P" number in the N-P-K ratio is the highest number of the 3...Jeanne
hi there, i have wanted to grow a clematis for years, but all i hear is how difficult it is. i live in zone 9a bacliff, texas. does anyone know of an easy clematis for this area? i love the blues and purples, but if i can't be picky any color will be fine.and general info about pruning an stuff.
thanks so much!
Yvonne
Yvonne..I too thought clematis were a picky pain in the you know what to grown UNTIL I learned their needs to flourish in the gardens..That being..living in a hotter zone..they flourish best being planted where they will stay moist..NOT SOGGY but moist..they love 6-8 hours of sun and in my hot Texas Zone of 8B..I have them in morning sun and afternoon shade or part sun in the afternoon ..Your Viticellas aka Pruning group 3's are the easiest to grow for beginners..I grow the pruning group 2's as well..I also have some Montanas...where will you be buying yours?...Jeanne
ps...Clematis "Polish Spirit" is a very easy purple clematis to grow..as well as "Voluceau" & "Galore"..I can go on an on with clematis
I don't know how far apart Yvonne and Jeanne are but I have the feeling Yvonne is today's luckiest person on DG to have found Jeanne in TX.
