Generic gardening questions

Shoalwater, WA, Australia

thought i'd start a thread for generic gardening questions that aren't about a particular plant or anything, just about general gardening knowledge.

my first question for here is this:

my canna has rhyzomes, and my agave has stolons ... what's the difference?

cheers

kerri

Stolon
Horizontal stem extending from parent stem running above or below the ground to produce a new plantlet.

Rhizome
A horizontal stem that runs underground putting out roots as it goes as well as sending up erect shoots at intervals, it may be swollen and store energy over Winter.

Coffs Harbour, Australia
