Links to native and invasive plant lists

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

I have been thinking that a "Sticky " thread at the top of the forum would be a good idea so people can more easy access the list of native plants to their own State.

If you scroll down on this page and click on the search bar for the states names you will find all of them there, select one then click on the submit button for the one you have selected and you will see all the native plants for that state.

Can you think of others that should be added?
I can then ask Dave or Terry to put it up and we will have an easy access to necessary information.
I would like some suggestions please.
Thank you,
Josephine

I like the native plants lists. I think the invasives lists would be more useful in the Invasive Plants forum, especially since most of them are introduced and not native plants.

BTW, I don't know if this will be helpful but I just reposted this link in the Mid Atlantic forum. It has a list of native plant nurseries in the Chesepeake Bay watershed states - MD, NJ, NY, NC, PA and VA.

For California, www.calflora.org is my absolute favorite reference. To access much of it you have to sign up for an account, but it's free. It covers pretty much any plant that occurs in the wild in CA (and it tells you whether it's native, introduced, invasive, etc). I find it to be a great resource when I find things growing at the beach or in a local park--you can search by plant family or genus, by the county that you found it in, by the type of plant community it was growing in, etc. And there are photos for most of the more common ones. It's rare that I find something growing in the wild that I'm not able to ID by looking around on there.

Native Plant Society of New Mexico: http://npsnm.unm.edu/

We may need a separate stickie for id sites - I have a few favorites!
My favorite site for years has been http://www.polyploid.net/swplants/index.html - a bonus is it is the work of fellow DG'r paalexan http://davesgarden.com/members/paalexan/

I use the state search at wildflower.org http://www.wildflower.org/plants/ when I want to search for plants native to New Mexico. The search can be refined in many ways.

Edited to add another site 2/10/08
http://www.plantnative.org/
Has 3 search boxes
1: Native Plant Nursery Finder
2: Community Service Organization Finder
3: Regional Plant List Finder - When I tried this link for my state it did not work. I'm going to notify them by email. I tried several and only one link worked for me.

Hi frostweed,
There are a lot of Canadians on DG, do you have a Native and Wild Plant file or forum for our provinces like you do for the states?

Margaret,
For native plants, this last link from Josehine's first post includes Canada, the links for Canada are near the bottom of the page after the list of United States.

This site shows images of seeds, SEEDLINGS, and fruits. Why emphasis on seedlings? I do not know how often I have tried finding a good place to verify the seedlings I have coming up. It does not have everything, but more than I've seen elsewhere.

I just found this forum, and hope it becomes more active! I joined Wild Ones this Spring and have really learned a lot about natives. I bought a book that shows seedlings, but it doesn't have a lot of plants so I'll be visiting the link you posted quite often, especially next Spring.

Here's a list of weedy plants for Illinois:
http://www.illinoiswildflowers.info/weeds/weed_index.htm

On the home page of that site there's a section of links to other websites. The thumb-nail photo search is pretty good. I selected "Wildflowers" and "Weedy" for general habit and came up with this listing (the same search can be done for the other categories besides Wildflowers):

What is "Wild Ones"?

maccionoadha has already covered most of Mass, but I'll add two links to New England Wildflower society:

"Go Botany," a plant ID/finder system:

https://gobotany.newenglandwild.org/

and their 2016 plant list

http://newfs.org/grow/buy-native-plants/plant-availability-list.pdf

(obviously, soon to be replaced by a 2017 list; but as a novice, I use it a lot to check sun/soil needs and pollinator appeal of potential additions.)

Wild Ones is a native plant organization - to quote their home page: "Wild Ones continues to lead the natural landscaping movement as we explore, teach, and change the practice of gardening in our communities and around the country to using native plants."

It looks like there isn't a local chapter in your area, but there's a lot of useful information on their site- including info on how to start your own chapter.

SallieKr--not long after I asked you I spotted "Wild Ones" in an inset box in the Prairie Moon nursery catalog. Sounds like a group on the right track....

Yes, I remember a couple of local members mentioning Prairie Moon as a good source for plants, even though they're located North of our area. If you're on Facebook, check out the Wild Ones page. The post a lot of photos and info from members in the NE area.

I didn't see this site listed here.. It's an up and coming search engine/key covering native and introduced wildflowers, trees, shrubs, mosses, etc. of North America. It's a great work that is a compilation of, and relies heavily on, already existing data from numerous sources.. Which it includes links to in each species. Works great on my android phone(no download) and you can narrow it down to your location or any other location you'd like to take a survey of. Drop down menus to limit results by description, name, class, family etc. Search by area. Search by common name or binomial. I'm underselling what it is.. Thank you Steven K. Sullivan for your efforts, past and present! So many books I don't have to lug around anymore.
https://wildflowersearch.org/

The only thing you can't do is search with your own image.. Something I know is out there as an application (never used them).
