witchhazel -earliest bloom?

Wallingford, PA

I'm loving the sweet smelling witchhazels blooming now in Pennsylvania (zone 6). Any recomendations on which have the best bloom for february? or other attributes I should consider?

I have Arnolds Promise and it is a beautiful yellow. There are several reds for your zone. There was a long thread on Hamemelis last year with all of the types. I'll look for them.

There are some very nice photos here-

You continue to amaze me Equil. You are the smartest woman I have ever known.

Ummm, terryr taught me how to use the search engine here so don't get overly impressed. You just go up to the radio button above in the upper right corner of this page listed as (: Search forums :) and click on that then type in witchhazel then click enter. Voila! Up will come threads with witchhazels.

I did that and it came up with a bunch of nothing. I used hamemalis too. You are just luckier than I (and smarter)

Wait, something's wrong then. All I did was click on the link above and I typed in the word witchhazel and then where it asked me to Limit to threads in which forum:, I used the drop down box and scrolled down to Trees and Shrubs. Up popped threads. Try it again maybe? Maybe something with the system was just temporarily down? I don't know. Ask ecrane3, she's knows all about these kinds of things and she can help you if it doesn't work for you.

I used hamemalis too

Hamamelis might work better ;-)

Gee usually google fixes that stuff for me. Shoot why is proper spelling necessary in such a joy as gardening?
Resin look in trees and shrubs for my question.

My "Jelena" is blooming nicely, but she never lost all her leaves, and therefor looks a bit scragly. "Primavera" is blooming too, since the beginning of the month.

Thanks Equi!

Very nice photos. Get the whole picture of the WH. I want to see it.

Man oh man do you always take nice macro photos! Love the 'Primavera'.

Marin, CA(Zone 9b)

Which one do you want to see as a whole?

I suspect he'd like to see them both. I know I would.

Marin, CA(Zone 9b)

Well, the Jelena looks a bit weird, with all the brown leaves that never fell off. And the Primavera got trampled by the deer and broke. So don't expect anything grand, I have my reasons for up close photography, heehee

I'll photograph them tomorrow, I can't find a representative picture.

Oh no, bambi strikes again!

Marin, CA(Zone 9b)

I never got the Bambi hype, and personally think they would look good with a .... oh no, fence around them in the wild!!!!

It was trying to get to my BIRD bath, and stood up on its hind legs, drinking. It ripped the Primavera in two...

But, it will be ok, it's just going to take a long time to get into some kind of acceptable shape again. They grow real slow here.

I think in colder zones they get a beautiful fall colour ( here it only was a couple douzen of beautifully coloured ones)
and the brown leaves will not stick to the plant as they do for me.
Zone defiance, and badly too!

Regarding the Bambi hype, Good basics here-

This is one of the better short articles available outlining the issues-

Real eye openers, eh?
