Gloria

La Salle, MI(Zone 5b)

Well I've been up since 4:30 and all we have here is rain :( my front yard is worse than I have ever seen it, in the 34 years we have lived here. I am so sick of mud and slush. When we did get snow it never really amounted to much more than 2 inches. ( I think we did manage to get about 4 to 6 " once in Dec.) I wish we'd get a good foot of it.

south of Grand Rapid, MI(Zone 5a)

Nothing here to speak of...is this all a bunch of crying wolf? Winds are really a blowing outside though....I'm staying inside and peeking out the window. Weatherman is saying 'it will come'....we'll see.

Bay City, MI(Zone 6a)

we have about an inch so far and its really snowing here now! The radar looks like we will be seeing much much more!!! go ahead SNOW cover my plants till spring!!!

OMG the concert rocked! We had floor tickets(no chairs) so as soon as the band started we jumped the rail and found some great seats in the executive level and we could see over all the tall people that stood in front of us. The boys had a great time(me too) lets see they got it all in one concert-there was a fight on the main floor and the guy next to me went right through the middle of the boys to jump down and help break things up! crazy
Then at the end of the night they got to see some ()() bare and spinning around in front of them!!!! My dh drove and picked us up-so it was really nice I didnt have to drive :)
My knees are really sore today but it was a great concert!!

Think its a coffee morning-maybe some mocha mixed in the bullet!!! yum

I hope we get hammered with snow!!!!!! cuz in a few weekz its going to be spring in no time!

Fenton, MI(Zone 5b)

Hello all,
Well here's a report from just 15 minutes south of Flint off US 23!! The snow here came down only an inch but it was rain/snow mix and the roads are all ice!! It is very dangerous on the roads and by ways here! I am so glad I do not have to go to work MUCH in the winter. I can stay here and have a cuppa joe with all of you!!
Hey how about those primaries?? Thought we'd have some clear choices. But then again I don't think
people are all that sold on anyone candidate because WE still know so little about what EACH one stands for!! I don't mean the party stand I mean what they PLAN to do to fix our major issues.
Oh well I guess it just never changes and you have to try to look at their voting record and their
past to see the future and then close your eyes and PICK!! Hope for the best!! LOL!!
Well I think I'll do some seed catalogue looking and planning my flower choices for my pots.
I tried some house plants in pots the last few years. i used Ti plants in the middle of several planters instead of the spikes. i just picked em up and brought them in at the end of the season. I also got some huge dracenas called "lime light" that i put in the planters on my shaded front porch!! They 3' lime green tropical plants were great looking!!
What are your plans today? Or for your yard n garden????

The 'crappo' has arrived!! Snowing to beat the band and the wind has really picked up. Local schools weren't closed, but I bet they close early! I've been cleaning and listening to a book on tape on my Ipod (newest toy) Time for a little snack...gotta keep the energy level up!!

Dori...sounds like you had a blast last night!!

AuGres, MI(Zone 5b)

Hi everyone,

It's a little after ten a.m. here and it's really coming down. We only had maybe half an inch when I woke up at 6 a.m. Now I'd say we have a couple inches with more to come. It's a blowing snow. I let the hubby sleep in today and I took out the garbage. I got mom up and fixed her breakfast and gave her meds and breathing treatment. I then made out a check to Dan for my roses order. I bought a dozen double red Knockout roses. I have a long driveway and a white picket fence all around the house and I want to do a mass planting of the red roses all along the outside of the fence. When you drive up in the yard you'll be blinded by red roses. ha ha ha At least that's the plan and how it looks in my mind. I chose those because theyr're supposed to have a long bloom time and be pretty disease resistant and tough. I do not want to pamper hybrid teas. I will buy some of those styrofoam rose cones before winter and cover them to keep the animals from chomping them all down. I spent too much money on them to have them be dinner for Bambi. I told my husband to watch for me going to the mailbox and if I wasn't back in ten minutes to come find me. I am always afraid of falling. :) I used to take my cordless phone in my coat pocket when I'd trudge out to retrieve the mail.

Hubby and I stayed up till one in the morning watching the primary. It seems to have been a great success. Everyone is claiming victory. ha ha ha I think we'll be having a whole lot more campaigning for the next 9 months. I wish they wouldn't start the race till about a month before. ha ha ha It goes on too long. IMHO

Dori, it sure sounds like you had a great time at the concert. I'm sure your kids had a blast. I've only been to one concert in my life. That was to see Roy Orbison about 32 years ago. ha ha ha He was a great singer. I can't keep up with all the new people. I feel so old I don't know half their names. I do watch American Idol though. I enjoy seeing the process and young singers be discovered and go on to fame.

Well, we're hunkering down today and just going to watch the snow fly. Good day to play on the computer and watch old movies. I hope you all get lots of wonderful snow cover for your flowers.

Fenton, MI(Zone 5b)

Hello all,
Yep! we got the BAD weather conditions, but I for one LOVE them!! It's a day to stay home and do what I have neglected or as you said Brenda & Ronna movies and soup!!!
I have just been reading some stuff about seedling starting. Some one put this link in another thread and it is fascinating! I have to get some seeds going and although i have little damping off I would like to have NONE!! This guy Tom recommends some interesting mix proportions and topping of "chick grit" I am going to try it this year!!
OOPs I will have to send the link in another message.
Oh dori it does sound like you had a ball at the concert! How did you manage to stay energized having also helped your son move on Sat.???
Wow I had better start working out or drinking mountain dew!!!
Julie

Fenton, MI(Zone 5b)

Ok here is the link http://tomclothier.hort.net/index.html
It is fascinating and very useful!!
Julie
Can any one tell me the process to add the link so it can be opened from this
message thread. This was all I knew how to do. I know it won't open from here sorry!
I am a computer illiterate! Help if you can.

Bay City, MI(Zone 6a)

i use to buy seeds from Tom along time ago! yep he has great info!

Fenton, MI(Zone 5b)

Oh I see my link will open!!! Great I guess the administration has that worked out. How cool it's the
first time I tried it!!
Dori does he sell seed? You are a great resourse.
Thanks for all the help!! It must be the DEW!!! LOL! LOL!

Also does any one here grow potatoes?
Can you recommend any varieties? My first time.
I have a girl friend who grew 4 varieties and cellered them and is still eating them. Says she'll get through the whole winter from the summer bounty!
I want to try.
Thanks all.

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

Bunch of early birds. Me too. Had to leave at 6am to go to Midland.
First had to backtrack 10 miles for a live power line down, then hit Midland that had 2" of ice on the roads. Slid off the road several times and past my road. Made a wrong turn and ended up 30 minutes late.
The appt was canceled.
3 hours on the road for nothing. (round trip)
Our roads here were not bad. South was terrible.
It has been snowing all day. Doesn't look like it is going to stop.
Glad the snow was late so Dori could go to the concert. Sounds like it was great fun.
Everyone keep safe and drive careful.

Plainwell, MI(Zone 5b)

yuck!!!! when does it all end??? our place looks just like that. are we neighbors??? lol. be careful when going out everyone... Ronna

Millington, MI(Zone 5b)

School let out at noon and my son and I shoveled the driveway. By the time we reached the road, another inch had filled in where we started. And its a short driveway! I would say we have around ten inches at least. Its 8:00 pm and still snowing.

Yes, be very careful-our back roads don't get plowed often, and I had to run up to the store to get some milk. The truck is still loaded with wood from that downed tree, so I took the car. Very slowly...thank goodness the little party store is only about a mile away. No more road trips for me tonight!

Plainwell, MI(Zone 5b)

sounds like a good idea to stay home... still snowing here also. Ronna

Bay City, MI(Zone 6a)

There are people stranded all over my area! We just rescued my DIL and my son still has to try to make it to work-its absolutely horrid out there!!! I can see cars stuck up and down the main road by my house here in the country!!!
Its cold and blowing we have a 6ft drift across the driveway and the visibility was NONE when we were just out. You can tell if your even on the roads..

My heart and prayers are with the south too and the weather they were just dealt. this weather is just horrible!!!

AuGres, MI(Zone 5b)

Hubby went out to shovel the furkids a spot to potty. He cleared off the cement back patio and walkway to the gate. He said he thinks we got about 8 inches. Hard to tell since it's blowing around so much.

My daughter in law said her morning classes at Delta college are cancelled. I'm so relieved. I hope they decide to stay closed all day so she doesn't have to drive down there at all.

I was watching TV news on the tornados through the south. Just horrible. I feel so bad for those people. That one lady was crying and said her house was gone and then she choked up and said it took her horses and her dog. **tears** I can't imagine. We may have a bunch of snow but nothing like what they are going through. My thoughts and prayers are with all of them.

See you all in the morning for coffee.

Brenda

Bay City, MI(Zone 6a)

Brenda i live 2miles from delta and there are cars stuck all over salzburg and the high ways are still one lane and its awful out there
we drove to the casino and back-took my son to work and saw the casino-was very dead-but there were a few fruitcakes there!!!!!!!!

going to go chill before bed-we had to pull a guy out of our way to get home!!!

SPRING!!!!!!

Fenton, MI(Zone 5b)

Well Who is up for coffee???
I am going to turn on the news. it seems as if all the going home traffic took several hours to get to their destinations yesterday evening. i am soo glad i had no where to go!!
See you all later!

Morning wow I know we got all of a foot of snow!!!!!!!!!!!!! the traffic in W. River rd . is moving real slow I can hardly wait to go to work Some one plowd our driveway in the night GOD BLESS THEM and praying for all our souther friends be careful out there
Gloria

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

Looks like about 10" fell yesterday here. DD says that in Clio it was worse and the roads were terrible there yesterday with stranded cars etc, as mentioned already.
And like above, DH was plowing and when he was done, the sidewalk to the house had another 2" on it. It was a never ending battle.
He is planning a fun run to BayCity to work this morning.
This snow reminds me of spring snow. So maybe spring is on the way.
Planted some African Daisies in a pot of dirt. Never heard of them before. Trying to get a jump start on the year.

Millington, MI(Zone 5b)

I live about four miles from Clio and so far all I have heard on our road today is snowmobiles. My driveway is completely snowed back in, we just cleared it last night. What a mess.Man, I hope this is the last big snow!

Bay City, MI(Zone 6a)

its so much FUN!!!!!!!!!!! will report in a bit
for now a pictures worth 1000 words

Hi everyone. Checking in from AuGres........

The sun is shining and we have a ton of snow. Hubby is out plowing the driveway now. My guess is about ten inches or more. Hard to tell from the drifting.

Thanks so much Dori for the up close report around Delta college. I've been listening to the radio since 5 a.m. Finally Delta decided NOT to open at noon. I'm so glad. I wasn't going to let my daughter in law chance it anyway. We live too far away and I'd die of worry thinking she was stranded somewhere in a ditch. I'm so glad they cancelled. Now she has more time to study and work on their taxes and catch up on laundry or whatever.

The snow plow has come down our road at least once. He must have been going 60 m.p.h. My mailbox is still standing through. :) I wonder if we'll get mail delivery today?

I'm so glad I don't work any more and hubby is retired. It's nice to know you don't "have" to go out in bad weather. Dori, I feel bad for your son commuting from Standish to Bay City in bad weather. If it's ever too bad to make it down there I could put him up in my bunkhouse if he could make it over to AuGres. We're about 17 miles from Standish. I bet the casino was dead. I can't imagine anyone getting out in this to gamble. ha ha ha

Have fun playing in the snow people.

Chat later,

Brenda

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

DH made it to work ok, but said there were many abandoned cars along the road.

lilmac, fraid to tell you, we will get more snow. Our heaviest snow is usually in March. You may want to go to Fla and come back about the third week of March. Ah, remember the snow we got the first part of April last year? (oh no, you guys will kick me out of this thread for remembering that one)

Haven't heard from DD this morning, but last night she emailed me that a couple of the newscasters were going to spend the night at her house as the roads were so bad and she lives close to the tv station.

We also have nice sunny day today. But sure is cold though.

Yup, welcome to Michigan. Don't get used to the weather, because it will change.

I know we aren't out of the woods yet with snow though. What if we didn't have those two big thaws though. We would have run out of place to shovel the stuff by now. I know here we lost about 12" the first thaw and about 10" last week when it was warm. We would have been tunneling to the garage by now.

Bay City, MI(Zone 6a)

i wish we had all of it so the boys could see what my DH and i are talking about!
back in the 60-70's when we got real snow and the sides of the roads were like driving in a tunnel!

Bay City, MI(Zone 6a)

here is Kegan by the snow drifts, he is about 5'2" now :)

Thumbnail by notmartha
Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

Hey, back in the 50's and 60's it was deeper. Or was I shorter?

I remember going to the cabin in Gaylord and standing on the roof of the car to walk on the snow, then we had to dig down to the cabin. The neighbors had a flat roof and it caved in.

Then there was that blizzard in '66 was it? When the drifts were 10 and 15 feet deep.
There was no school for over a week. It was cool.

Millington, MI(Zone 5b)

I definitely think snow was deeper years ago. I remember snow banks up to the windows and making tunnels big enough to stand up in. And I'm not that much taller now-only 5.0", lol.

Took most of the day to get this last snow cleared out. If I never see a snow shovel again, thats fine by me!

Here is a shot across the front of the house-there is a flower bed under there some where.

The truck still has debris from my tree fall last week....but the whole thing is pretty snow covered.

Oops...wrong one, lol

It was actually nice here today. The sun was shining. Hubby cleared the drive without much trouble on his tractor. I will post a pic I took of him. The snow plow must have come by three or four times. They got my road cleared really well. We drove into town and went out for lunch and it was fine in town. 23 was clear and dry and all the businesses had their lots plowed. I was impressed. You can tell the people up here are ready for anything and don't let a little snow stop them from doing what needs to be done. We did not get our mail though. We called the post office and they said the big mail truck couldn't get in with the mail to deliver because of the weather. I guess we'll get it tomorrow.

Delta college finally cancelled school for the whole day instead of just till noon. I'm so glad my DIL didn't have to try to drive down there. I get the impression that it was much worse south of us.

I made a nice big pot of homemade chicken noodle soup. It was just that kind of day. It was good!!

Love the pics everyone is posting!!
