I never really noticed this before today, and hate to admit it, but Starlings are very pretty birds. Look at the colors -- the turquoise, blue, purple, yellow on the beak and white specks. I just wish that they weren't such bullies and didn't hog the food so much!

Nice pics guys!

Yes Starlings are pretty birds; the fact that they come in large numbers is the problem.

The privileges of beauty.

Quite a surprise a few hours ago. I was out on an errand when a flock of Mallard ducks flew up off to the side of me and headed off toward the river (Mississippi). In January?!?

Jeffersonville, IN(Zone 6b)

Kinda makes you rethink things, doesn't it? Cori (my daughter) threw out some dog food for the Starlings after seeing their pictures.
One more picture....

If there's open water and food available, Mallards will stick around and use it. The Sibley Guide shows them wintering into southern Saskatchewan as well as most of MN.

Several hundred Mallards winter over hear in Anchorage, Alaska. There was a recent report of Mallards in Fairbanks, even farther north. A shot of winter Mallards in Ship Creek, Anchorage, AK.

Nice pics everyone!! There is a canal and the Hudson River in my backyard and there are a flock of ducks that stay here all winter. Unfortunately they have migrated up onto my back yard because of the feeders. I enjoy watching them but try to scare them out because of the mess they can make!! I don't really want the mess in my yard because of my grandson! Eleanor

Brainerd, MN

Well, I had no idea! I've lived in this part of MN for 5 years now and not seen a Mallard in January. There's always so much going on around us that we miss...

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

No, I don't have my bowl yet or mealworms(still debating on that!). We just have lots of them around here. That was why I was out looking, to see if I could find any out & about yet. Saw about 8-10 of them.

Melbourne, FL

My morning spent outside produced some decent pics. I'll start with an Indigo Bunting male.

Wow gardenpom, you were on a roll today! Hard to choose a favourite, that squirrel has worked out how to shim a pole. lol!

If I had to pic a bird out I'd have to go for the male Indigo Bunting, a wonderful moody feeling to the pic.

The female birds don't seem too impressed by the males advances!

Brainerd, MN

The Grackle shot is really fun. I like them all. My favorite? The green leaves!
