Redpolls

Grand-Falls, NB(Zone 4a)

I figured, it would be best for me to start this thread, just for the Redpolls, and post pictures of them here. This series is pictures taken Feb 1, 2008.

Wow!! Amazing set!

#1: Bird on the dish is Arctic; top left on the feeder might also be
#2: Arctic
#3: Common. Too heavily streaked for Arctic. Size can be useful, but a fluffed-up Common can look larger than a sleeked-down Arctic
#4: Common
#5: Probably Arctic, but 'worryingly' pink (Arctics don't usually have much pink)
#6: Arctic left, Common right
#7: Probably Common
#8: Common
#9: Second-bottom on left is likely Arctic; one or two others might possibly be, but mostly Commons
#10: Arctic
#11: Extreme top left is probably Arctic; bottom front (back to us) might also be
#12: All Common
#13: All Common
#14: All Common, except perhaps the one facing us with wing half-open
#15: Two or three 'ouch' birds in there; top centre best bet for Arctic, but still one of those difficult individuals!
#16: Probably all Common, except perhaps lower front left bird
#17: Probably all Common
#18: Same as the pic on 'Daily Pics' vol. 59
#19: Two very probable Arctics, 3rd and 6th down on left side
#20: Both Common

Wow your really getting alot of Hoary Redpolls (arctic) along with the
Common Redpolls! :-)

Very nice pics burn!!

Grand-Falls, NB(Zone 4a)

Appreciate your input Resin. Will study this even more. And see what I can do for the study you mention about.

Thanks Pelle, yes this year, and last year were good year for these birds here. But last year, I didn't know anything about the Hoary. To me they were just Redpolls. Thanks to this bird forum, I've been able to widen out, in the knowledge of birds. I still got a lot to learn.

I was looking up more information about Redpolls and came across this site where the man who keeps it is looking for a photo of a Hoary Redpoll. The link is below, but I don't know anything about the person who is requesting the photo.

Nice pic rita!

Did you have alot more last winter?

Grand-Falls, NB(Zone 4a)

I've only seen one Sisken, here this winter, and that the one, Pelle Ided for me on another thread. It was a female. I know they were here last year in great numbers. They also came with the Redpolls.
Here's one of yesterday. Hoary Redpoll

Good job burn!!

Grand-Falls, NB(Zone 4a)

Thanks, it's getting there. I've watched them most of the day, yesterday studying them and trying to pick, which one, were the Hoary and which one, were the Common. Hard to tell with the ones on the ground. I had the top view from just below my bathroom window. The picture here gives you an idea of what I was looking at.

In this picture I see 7 possibles:

2 in the bottom middle, one on each side of the small one in the middle.
In the middle near the post left side 2 closest to post, and the one further from the post up, He's smaller, but whiter. Not those in the background.
Other side of the post, where there are 3 in a row, I say the second and possibly the one in front of him.
Bottom right, The second from the side of picture.
How did I do?

yes, pelletory, lots, all winter long. even some during the summer

Quoting:
In this picture I see 7 possibles

Tricky!

The only one I'd be at all confident on calling is the one second from bottom right. But some of the others could possibly be 1st-w females.

I wrote a post yesterday and forgot to post it Duh.

Rita, I really like your feeder, the feed you've got in it, is it for different type of birds?

Resin, I was going to give up IDing the ones on the ground and concentrate on the one in the trees, but this one intrigues me, No marking on the side, white, but small? I have a few pics of him, that I'll post next.
