Crazy crazy weather

(Zone 4a)

Today was the strangest weather day I have seen around here in a while. First off last night it poured rain so hard and the winds were so strong that it felt like a train coming through my window. Anyhow with all that rain I was sure we would have some flooding - it was also very mild out. Well today we had a flash freeze happen!!! Oh goodness gracious what a mess!!!! The temps literally dropped so quickly it was unbelievable and not only did they drop but the winds really took off again. Today was piercingly cccccold!!! Just walking from work to my van which is only about 25 meters my face froze and it felt like I had little crystals picking my face!!!

Anyone else having crazy weather like this???

I have moved on to February and wish to not discuss January anymore.LOL

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Today's weather sounds like it is going to be crazy!! We are supposed to get everything but hail today - snow, sleet, lots of freezing rain north of Albany, maybe rain north of Albany!! All of the schools are closed in this area because of the coming storm. I know first hand what happens if kids have to be sent home in the middle of the day - it's a nightmare for a large elementary school where the kids are bussed. Call parents that work and have to make sure someone is home to meet the bus and if not those kids are brought back to school and have to be fed and taken care of. Schools would much rather lose their state aid for the day than go through that!! I tried to convince Colin's mother not to go to work (works in Albany, an hour south of here) but she said she'd call to find out how the weather is doing up here during the morning. Sounds like Maine is going to get a lot of snow. Eleanor

1st day in Feb. is the 1st blunder of the month. Snow to sleet to freezing rain to rain and then turning back to snow over night. Puff the magic dragon should appear.....

Nelson, NH(Zone 5a)

I just wish winter would be winter and have only snow!

Sue, RI(Zone 6a)

We are supposed to have 1 to 2 inches of rain today-ground's bare and guess it's going to stay that way for the time being!
Eleanor, know what you mean about the trouble it causes when school closes early-back in dec a storm came in and up in providence there were kids stuck on buses until almost 11pm! Parents were searching for buses to get their kids! The state didn't take care of the roads and many buses were stuck in snow banks. I've learned over the years to use my own judgment and will keep the kids home if I think it's going to get nasty outside.

Fairmont, WV(Zone 6a)

It is 45 and pouring down rain here, but it's supposed to get icy further up in the mountains. I hope it doesn't freeze tonight, it's impossible to drive around here in bad weather because of the steep hills and poor road treatment.

So I've been suffering the winter blues...anyone else? It's too cold to work outside (and the ground is too frozen, anyway), too early to start seeds, and my houseplants just don't fulfill that need to get my hands dirty. Going to work in the dark is a drag and I'm tired and unmotivated. (Pity party for one, your table is ready! :))

(BTW I lurk around the northeast forum even though I live in WV because I'm originally from MA and I get homesick :)).

Hi Pam,

Please feel free to post at any time! Yes, I too have some serious cabin fever. Good luck with your weather. We had some icy conditions this AM, but now it's all rain.

Hi Pam,
No need to lurk - join us anytime and/or all the time. Do you think you could find more room at your pity party table? I'm getting restless also. I took on another hobby - watching and feeding birds to help add some interest to the winter. Eleanor

Medway, MA(Zone 5b)

Pam, I think most of the NE Forum is made up of lurkers, whether they're from the NE or not. One of us came up with the quote "We're all northeast of somewhere"!
Where in MA do you hail from?

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

I agree with flowerhead410, ...we've had a very dry winter here.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Same here, though we're getting a decent soaking today.

(Zone 4a)

Well today was gorgeous and above seasonal values as will be the rest of the week. Today we were able to go out in warm sweaters and be ok!!! It was the perfect day to take the kiddies out sliding! It was sooooooo nice to be outside today!!

Tomorrow we have a big day planned of sledding on a great big HILL the girls will love that!!! I can't wait either!

Maine, United States(Zone 5b)

Yesterday's snow mixed with ice soon turned into all rain...and we also had the strong winds. When the winter started out, we had a couple big snows and everyone was saying it was going to be a snowy, cold winter. But, if you ask me, it's generally been pretty mild. All the snow in my yard is gone, for the most part. I also prefer to just have white on the ground straight thru til Spring. Don't tease me with the semi warmer temps and give me all that mud. Feb and March and pretty dreary months in Maine, in general. I expect a blizzard on or around April 1, in typical fashion ;)

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

are you in Maine, Noreaster?

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

Good point about teasing Noreaster! ☺

(Zone 4a)

I didn't mean to tease anyone LOL Hey I am not saying I can see mud yet but if the mild weather continues it is possible. We still have a lot of snow to melt down from the last couple of storms.

Maine, United States(Zone 5b)

Yes, Amethystsm, I'm on the southern coast.

Medway, MA(Zone 5b)

So, how come we're having (another) January thaw in February? Anyone have an almanac to consult?

(Zone 4a)

I think it is just called Global Warming - all this strange weather I mean...yikes!!!

Medway, MA(Zone 5b)

From time to time I see reports or comments about crazy weather around the early part of the century (20th). So if you lump them all together, I bet they thought they were having their own version of global warming, or the end of the earth, or something!

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

I don’t know whether it’s the greenhouse effect or not, It could be. I just hope it isn’t. I don’t think it means the end of the world, but some species may not be able to adapt to the changes since their habitat and food sources will be adversely affected too quickly. So will ours, but we can use technology to help us adapt. Again,... I hope it’s not true!

I also don’t like seeing the bareness of my property without being able to do anything about it till spring. Spring is more than just warm temps - it’s also about the angle of the sun & the intensity of the sun's rays. At least the snow provides a 'cover' in more ways than one.

Unfortunately I find myself in the position of not being able to do anything about either one…except sit and wait. ☺

Maine, United States(Zone 5b)

I know, I'd feel better to see some snow out there covering my plants. The freeze/thaw/freeze/thaw is supposed to be bad for them, right? I'd gladly put up with six or more weeks of being icy cold and snowy if it means my plants will all be big and beautiful for the Spring/Summer.

Medway, MA(Zone 5b)

I agree - I'd rather see snow, knowing there's nothing I can do about it, than see bare earth tempting me!

Got up 4 am and it had snowed 4". Clean up that stuff. 11 am flurries again, Sigh.... It goes away. Then the winds kick up and blew all the snow off the trees. Now the sun comes out and we are due for more stuff. The sun is going in and puff more stuff.

Maine, United States(Zone 5b)

I heard the weather forecast just now call for heavy snow tomorrow turning to ice/ rain, followed by potential thunderstorms..that's some crazy weather!

Yes it is as it is starting to hail now after 3" of snow. Then it is going to be freezing rain. Possible a lot of icing and that is not on the cake.

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

It is raining like crazy here. We are on flood warnings. Thank goodness for the sump pump in my basement! Now we may find out if the plumber set the furnace and water heater high enough off the basement floor - I told the contractor about the flooding before they started work.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes - lots of rain and snow melt here.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

I'm still just in the sleeting period, I don't want straight rain after all the snow we got. GG, things will be floating down hill!!
