BHA & mild Retinoids for mild acne

Has anyone used these kinds of products to treat primarily comedonal acne (clogged pores, whiteheads & blackheads)
My dermatologist recommended I try these products for my mild acne before I use stronger RX meds. Which is fine with me but there are so many choices.
She recommended Paula's Choice BHA 2% gel and Green Cream 3% Both are pretty pricey IMO so I want to see if anyone can give me a success story. Or if you have used another non RX product with success I would love to hear about it.
