Brewers yeast

What is the benefit if any in adding brewers yeast or yeast extract to soil or?

The reason I ask is that some DIY fertilizer recipes call for a can of beer or Brewers yeast. I was wondering what the benefit was .

I would imagine they are using it to increase microbiological activity in the soil. More good helpers to make your soil healthier and richer.

Yeast breaks down simple carbs (sugars), synthesizes enzymes, and vitamins. These by-products should be beneficial to plants. Spraying pure yeast cultures over soils may not be the most practical thing to do.
