Vinyl mattress pad?

Our 29 yr old daughter has a new mattress/box spring. I can not imagine sleeping on a mattress w/ a vinyl mattress pad as it would be hot and sticky. But she definitely needs some vinyl at the lower half of her bed as she is pre-menopausel. I use to fold and tuck a sheet in around the middle of the mattress and cover that with a mattress pad to protect the mattress. What do you gals do?
