Rag quilt question, Please

I need some help, please...I have a Babylock Companion 1550 and am sewing a rag quilt on it for the first time...3 layers of flannel....is it normal for the feed dogs to stop feeding? is it because of the thickness? I've had wrist surgery in the last month and I'm finding it's bothering my wrist (left side) 'cause I'm having to pull with that hand and guide with my right hand. Maybe I need a more powerful machine....any suggestions will be appreciated. Thank you, Deb
