What is the sewing machine of choice?

I am thinking about purchasing a new machine. I have one that is almost 40 years old....(I can't believe I just admitted that!) it is a Kenmore machine and has been wonderful over the years. However, I have not really been sewing much for the past fifteen years and was seriously considering making some skirt and things for my Granddaughter. So which is best? Brother? Singer? Kenmore? I see some that say Serger and Embroider machines too, I have no idea what those are...I do know what embroidery is, but I was curious as to whether the sewing machines now can do embroidery....right? Thanks for your suggestions!
