CFL question

We have outdoor spotlights that we only use occasionally but it seemed like an easy cost and energy saving thing to change them out for CFL's. Big mistake for us; the lights take forever to come on and if the dog is barking at something you want to know what it is then, not 4 minutes later. Maybe we bought the wrong ones? What are others doing and have you had the same problem? Any ideas?
