Glad this isn't a contest, It would be to hard to choose who would get 1st prize winner. So many wonderful bird shots. What a great way to pass the time!!!

How awesome to have a wild bird eat out of your hand! Another great photo.

I have a special fondness for egrets, cranes and herons. You're wallpaper now, kaperc! Beautiful, beautiful picture.

You're welcome. I shot a series of them running away from my garden, across the street and up the hill. They pretty much lived in the neighborhood all fall. One of my neighbors is a serious turkey hunter, so I always counsel them to head in the opposite direction.

I can see why it makes you laugh, boojum - I did, too!

Look at what it's standing on!!

In much of the heavily populated parts of North America, they arrive for the winter at about the same time as the first snow.

Is that snow it's standing on?

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

Gee if it really is a snow bird, it probably lives year round at your house. Your summer up there has to be...what 1-2 days?

The Ozarks, MO(Zone 5b)

Everyone in our area has always called Junco's snowbirds according to DH. I never noticed them until I joined this forum. (and yes, I wake up in a new world everyday)!

There are some beautiful pics here and I'm glad I don't have to choose a favorite!

Lawrenceville, GA

I had wondered what in the world bird Anne Murray was talking about in that song "Snowbird."
Now I know.
No snow in my backyard. TONS of juncos AKA snowbirds.

SNOWBIRD
" Beneath this snowy mantle cold and clean
The unborn grass lies waiting
for its coat to turn to green
The snowbird sings a song he always sings
And speaks to me of flowers
that will bloom again in spring
When I was young my heart was young then too
Anything that it would tell me,
that's the thing that I would do
But now I feel such emptiness within
For the thing that I want most in life
Is the thing I can't win
Spread your tiny wings and fly away
And take the snow back with you
Where it came from on that day
The one I love forever is untrue
And if I could you know
that I would fly away with you
The breeze along the river seems to say
That she'll only break my heart again
should I decide to stay
So little snowbird take me with you when you go
To that land of gentle breezes
where the peaceful waters flow
