Giant Pumpkins 2008

Nauvoo, AL(Zone 7a)

She is back! Just had to tell someone that I bought more giant pumpkin seeds.
This is the list for 2008
The first # listed is the pound of pumpkin that the seed came out of, followed by the name of the grower then the year. In perenthesis is the cross, The mother plant first that the pumpkin grew on and the size pumpkin the seed came out of , then the male pollinator and size pumpkin it came out of.

1235.5 Daletas 2007 ( 1370 Rose X 1068 Wallace)
1204 Daletas 2007 (1228 Jutras X 898 Knauss)
1203 Daletas 2007 (805 Pukos X 1370 Rose)
1225.5 Pukos 2006 (1231.3 Pukos X Self)
1256. Mckie 2007 ( 1308.5 Mckie X 1039 Leonard )
1221.5 Werner 2007 (1053.5 Werner X 848 Mackenzie)

Now I have to decide which one to cross with the other according to its history genetics.
Fun HUH,

Thanks for letting me share my news. Will chat later.

Wow, that's interesting. I saw a documentary on the Giant Pumpkin "weigh in" and couldn't believe my eyes. Those were mammoth!

See if you can get some pedigrees going back a few generations before you do any crosses. The fewer similarities in background you have, the more vigor you'll likely get.

The other pumpkin seeds I have are 530 Lishness 2005 (551 Langevin x Self) and that one was
551 Langevin 2004 (1016 Daletas X 846 Calais)

Then I have 1000.4 Lishness 2005 grown from 551 Langevin 2004 (1016 X 846) Pollinated with 371 Langevin 2004 (723 X845)

Then I have 75 mixed Howard Dill pumpkin seeds all taken from 500 pound pumpkins.

It is extremely hard to get hands on Pedigrees. The big growers seem to keep them to themselves. I have a few more coming but do not know what genetics they have.

New to the list:
1289 holland 2007 (1231 Pukos X 1347 Wallace)
1161 holland 2007 (1112 holland x 1231 pukos)
937 holland 2007 (634 filmore x 995 holland)
936 holland 2007 (1086 holland x 998 pukos)
931 holland 2007 (931 miller x 995 holland
676.9 lovelace 2007 (848 mackenzie x 556 lovelace)
1178.9 lovelace 2007 ( 998 pukos x 1370 rose)
705.9 lovelace 2007 ( 869 calai x 1370 rose)

Now I really dont know which ones i want to grow

Holy cats! Where did you get a 1289 Holland? That one crossed with a 1225.5 Pukos 2006 (slightly inbred and not sharing immediate parentage with the 1289 Holland) might do it as far as paperwork goes, but do you know what the fruit looked like? The giant breeders I knew who got the whole thing going in the 80s tried to cross deep ribs (equals thick flesh and girth) with length (equals an overall gain in size).

I got the seed with a DVD that i ordered from http://www.pumpkinsupply.com
which is HollandGiants.

I ordered their dvd package #2 It came with 2 dvds and 6 holland giant seeds.
I did not get to see the pictures of the pumpkins. But I could look into it.
If you find out before me, let me know.

OHHHHHH, the dvd that i got is Hollands Land O' Giants 2007 so it might have photos of them on the dvds. filmed and edited by Joel Holland.

P.S.
I havent watched the DVD yet but plan on having that for breakfast in the morning.

Couldn't find any pictures, at least by using the seed names.

there were so many pumpkins on that dvd that I could not keep up. Had to go backward several times.
The 1289 and the 1161 were both nice shapes, nice orange color, and nice ribs.
Most of the pukos from 2007 looked real nice too. I was trying to keep up cause also on the second DVD " How to do stuff in the pumpkin patch" had hollands fair winning pumpkins back as far as 2001 I think, plus others too.
They are great DVDs

Sounds fun! It's something I'd love to try and have studied it some, but I already have enough to deal with. Keep us posted and we'll enjoy your enthusiasm as the season progresses.
