Amaryllis Success!

Grand Haven, MI(Zone 5a)

This is my amaryllis saga. Every year I get one and it finally blooms sometime in January!

I got advice, here at Dave's Garden, to put the potted bulb on a heating pad. I did that and also added extra light. Here I am just before Christmas (As I've always wanted) with a $2 unmarked Walmart bulb!

Lovely!

I have a Green Goddess that has bloomed several times recently. But no leaves. Very strange-its usually the other way around lol. I have just cut off the last spent bloom stalk, and am seeing the beginnings of a couple of leaf starts. The last time it tried to leaf out, they died when only a couple inches long. What a weird little plant.

wow im glad to see that my husband just got mine for me for christmas,, very pretty!!!!

OK, it is done blooming and I'd like to keep it for next year. If I set it in a window to die back (keeping it watered so hopefuly the leaves will strengthen the bulb) do I need to repot it (it's in a 4" pot)?

What a beautiful picture. Somehow I missed this being posted earlier. I'm not sure what you do with the bulb. I bet you can goggle it if you didn't keep the directions on the box it came in.

I was told that they like to be root bound, and about an inch around each side of the bulb. If it is done blooming, have you cut the stalk off yet? Mine are re blooming right now. You might get lucky and get another stalk, so I wouldn't count it out yet! :)

Hey P.J. don't forget to feed the little bugger! Liquid tom./ rose food and or some bone meal. I mix bone meal in the watering can and feed it that way over the whole summer!!
I take all my bulbs out in the summer in their pots and let em "Bulk" up for the next display.
It has worked well for me although i am NO expert. I only have 12 bulbs.
Good Luck maybe some one here could tell us what they do to get reflowering.

After-Bloom Care

After-Flowering. After the amaryllis has stopped flowering, it can be made to flower again. Cut the old flowers from the stem after flowering, and when the stem starts to sag, cut it back to the top of the bulb.

Leaf Growth and Development.

Continue to water and fertilize as normal all summer, or for at least 5-6 months, allowing the leaves to fully develop and grow. When the leaves begin to yellow, which normally occurs in the early fall, cut the leaves back to about 2 inches from the top of the bulb and remove the bulb from the soil.

Bulb Storage.

Clean the bulb and place it in a cool (40-50 deg. F), dark place such as the crisper of your refrigerator for a minimum of 6 weeks. Caution: Do not store amaryllis bulbs in a refrigerator that contains apples, this will sterilize the bulbs. Store the bulbs for a minimum of 6 weeks.
Plant Again. After 6 weeks you may remove bulbs whenever you would like to plant them. Plant bulbs 8 weeks before you would like them to bloom.

imagine that i had no idea. but it sounds like a whole lot of work. i dont know if i will do all that or not. but thanks for the info... Ronna

Fenton, MI(Zone 5b)

Hey Ronna,
Loon gave very good advice. If you don't want to do the necessary work to rebloom bring it to the plant exchange. Someone (me ) would love to trade you something for that bulb!!!
It sounds as if yours is growing in water?? You do have to make sure you give extra attention to that bulb for any display the following year since water growth is pretty but the plant must be potted for it to store enough potential for next year!! I rebloom them for about 5 years now. No problem.
I have left some out in years past but not any more!! These bulbs are so expensive I can not afford to replace so many so i am very careful!!

yes it is in water can you put them in a soil??? the directions i have are for water. I had no idea you could put them in dirt!!! maybe i will take out of water and put in dirt thanks jazzy. do you have to plant with the top of the bulb sticking out? like if it was in water? i have no idea. ive never done this before... Ronna

Fenton, MI(Zone 5b)

Oh sorry Ronna, If it is in water let it finish it's bloom in water. after that pot it up and feed it well like a bulb!! Keep it well fed. I mix bone meal a table spoon per gallon every watering!!
Do this all summer until mid August then pull back on the water., let it go dry. I do not do it in mid Aug. but actually later cause i have no cool place to put them. I wait til Sept or Oct. ( but they won't re-bloom for Christmas this late) I lay them on their side in the pot and cut the green foliage off.
Some people unpot them wash the soil off and store them dry. They must be kept as you would any root crop..dry and cool!! They need 6-8 weeks of this before re-potting or standing them up and bringing them into a warmer environment with water and food. It takes about 6-8 weeks for them to bloom again. I do not re-pot only every second or third year. And yes the shoulders of the bulb should not be under soil. However a little trick if i forgot to plant them for a bloom time I want
can be expedited by a week or so by planting them a little deeper say 3 quarters in the soil instead of two-thirds of the plant as is more normal. NOW I am no expert this is just what I do!!
There are people her more adept and knowledgeable than i so lets hear it???

Julie I think I should send you mine I'v had it in the same pot fot 6 years and it gets great leaves no flowers ya think its time to repot!!!! LOL I think I'll pull the poor thing out and take care of it tommrow
