Video to DVD

I have several family videos (compilation of 8mm tapes) on VHS tapes that I'd like to have on DVDs. Is there a mechanism that I can hook up on my computer to accomplish this myself? Or do I need to take the VHS's somewhere and have it done "professionally". Some of the tapes are quite long (about 4 hours) and I don't mind having them on several DVDs. I'm just worried that eventually the VHS's will lose their quality and my tapes won't play any more.

Any suggestions would be welcome.
