download and burn virus deleter?

I have a virus/or spyware on my pc. 1st one in 8 yrs. I have Norton anti virus and attempted to download my new annual update and it wouldn't download at a rate that was reasonable so I got suspicious. I have my desk top pc w/ me here at work. One of the symptoms is the inability to stay online for more then a few minutes. Will the following work?: download a free anti virus program and then burn to a cd then w/ cd apply to my sick pc?
