winter protection for figs in Michigan

this is how i protect my inground figs from Michigan winters...i have tried many other methods but this one works the best for me.

When I was growing up in Dearborn I had a neighbor lady who was from the old country.........Italy I think. Her whole front yard was fig trees. To protect them for winter she used to bend the branches down and put carpets over them. I remember thinking it was a lot of work and she was an old lady then. She loved her figs.

I wasn't really into gardening much as a teen so I didn't pay that much attention but I do remember they were fig plants.

How did you get into growing figs? What do you do with them when you harvest them?

I've never even knew you could grow figs in Michigan. The only fig I've ever met was in a 'figgy newton"

How many figs have you got in the ground? Are they all in raised beds like the one in the pictures?

Also, what kind of fig is that?
