Question about a gift of a shawl

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

My DD is getting married next Oct. She has already ordered "the dress" and it is lovely. It leaves her shoulders and arms bare and looks beautiful on her.
I was buying some yarn very reasonable on ebay and picked up a cone of very rich looking cream colored soft knubby yarn. I was going to make her a sweater, but instead got the idea of a wrap or shawl for her wedding in case it is cold that day. (she could throw it over her shoulders to go to the reception)
My question is...Is this a hokey idea? Out of date? Out of fashion?
I started knitting the yarn and it is really pretty and would be nice I think, but I don't want to make something that is "not done" by today's standards.
Feedback...PLEASE.
