How Deep?

Athens, PA

I have 11 pots of clematis that I bought in the last couple of months and potted into larger containers. I want to bury them for the winter until the root systems are large enough to plant out next spring. How deep do I plant out my 11 pots?

Thanks!

I would plant directly in the ground but if you must use the pots be careful to sink the rim down as you do not want any water to not be able to get to the plant that is what will most likely kill it. I will usually cut the part of the container that rises above the soil line of the plant and bury the plant so that it is at soil level. It looks like any other plant and I can rescue it easily. I plant close to my com poster and where it will get water.
My driveway right now is still full of plants i never got "in"
I will be doing this tomorrow!!
Have fun. Sounds like you got quite a load of clems?
I love em. I have 75 or so. i have only 55 different varieties though.
Well have fun, keep warm!!

Carolyn...dig a hole and drop your pots into the soil..the roots will grow beautifully over the fall and winter...bury them so they are about an inch under the soil..remember to water well and mulch...Jeanne
