Another question ~ this tree (magnolia) lost a limb many years ago and has quite a hole at the injury site. It fills with rain then slowly drains brown gunk. Is there anything I can do to help this situation?

Lost limb
Best is not to do anything. If one drilled a drainage hole at the bottom, it would just open up more access for decay to invade the rest of the trunk.
