I think my eMachine power supply is dead

When I push the ON button - absolutely nothing happens. I tried it at anoth plug and the same thing - nothing. How much damage can I cause if I buy a power supply at a big box office supply store and try to put it in myself? It is a 2482T eMachine that has had the motherboard replace due to a lightening strike too close to home.
