I think the lack of blue is just because it's in silhouette against a blue sky.
Gray Jay has a much smaller bill, and doesn't have the dark breast band (visible in pic #1), and is also shorter-tailed.

You're welcome. Just to be clear, the tongue comment had nothing to do with the ID, I just meant it's a good shot!
These are the birds that leave the horizontal rows of holes on tree trunks.
I heard him for an hour before I finally saw him. Then when I did he was not in a position to get a good pic. The woods were full of tapping yesterday.
