How long before homemade suet goes bad?

Redcliff, AB

I made a suet cake for the birds from this recipe:
1 cup crunchy peanut butter
1 cup lard
2 cups quick cook oats
2 cups cornmeal
1 cup flour

The birds are just loving it, especially now that it has gotten cold outside. We're already seeing some snow, and the birds are wolfing the suet.

But I was wondering how long this stuff will keep? Does it ever go bad, and if it does how can one tell? I mean, without actually going out and sampling it. Bleh!

Thanks for your help :)

In cold weather like yours it should be fine for a long time.

I'm sorry (or glad) to say mine gets eaten so fast I've never had to think about checking on it.

If it were to go bad I would think you would start seeing fuzzy white or green spots on it.

Glad to hear the birds are enjoying it so much!! Pelle

Thanks, Pelle! More and more birds are starting to discover my suet basket. Until now I've had just a downy woodpecker. Today I've seen for the first time a blue jay (I didn't realize just how big they are!!!) and 2 red-breasted nuthatches. I'm hopeful that the suet will disappear fast enough that I don't have to worry about spoilage.
