New organic gardener, just a few questions

Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

What exactly are the benefits and uses of alfalfa? Also, what are good alternatives to commercial fertilizers. And third (sorry full of questions tonight) what are the best techniques to maintain a St. Augustine lawn organically? Thank you so much for sharing you're information.

Well I'm no expert but I do have a lovely organically-maintained St Aug lawn. St Augustine loves to be mowed high, as high as your mower can go. Mulch mow the clippings. Water it 1" a week (what they call "deep and infrequent") which promotes deeper and healthier roots. I fertilize once a quarter with plain old corn meal.

My St Aug is organic too, but the last few years it's struggled because of shade and tree roots. One of the best things we found for it is an organic fertliizer called Texas T. Also, since it likes acid soil better than our DFW alkaline, we give it Texas greensand for extra iron.
