Bookmarks disappeared!

When I came back from a 2 week vacation, I discovered all my bookmarks are gone, an extensive list. :-(
I suspect something was automatically updated but why those would be wiped out I have no idea.
I have DSL so leave the computer on all the time plus my son was home but he never went on the computer.
Any idea if I can somehow recover them? I use Firefox browser, AVG anti virus, XP OS version 2002.
