Cactus Society of Philadelphia, my first meeting

Plumiedelphia, PA(Zone 7a)

I was so blown away by all the incredible plants I saw.
Id like to say I was speechless
But that never happens. ;)
I finally have time to post some pics.
Please dont ask me what the names are lol!
Sally knows a few and some are hers.
She has some really terrific specimens.
I was told to bring a few plants to show.
I had no idea there was a contest.
I joined for $15.- yearly and entered.
My Adenium Beauty Cloud took 3rd place in one group
My Fockea Edulis took a second place in another.
They used real 'show' standards so I was really surprised.
Anyway enough chit chat for now.
Here are some great pics!!

The Plants in the Clear Plastic containers are SallyDs'
The watering system she has devised is pretty smart.
Im going to apply it to some adeniums and see what happens.
Im sorry to say I dont remember what place her plants took
It took the rest of the day to get over all of the visual stimulation LOL!

OH MY!!!!!! Wow - guess I have a few years until mine reaches "awesome, gnarly looking fat-plant stage" :-)

Bay Area, CA(Zone 9b)

What gorgeous plants!!!!

Now, where's the pictures of your winners, Malestrom? We'd love to see them!

Yardley, PA

Great pictures Malestrom. I forgot my camera so I am glad you have these.
That Fockia Edulis was amazing. I just turned mine on it's side to start training it like that. They also gave me ideas about pruning some of my plants. It is a waste of time entering the Phila. Flower Show without going to one of their meetings and learning what they want. I never walk away from one of those meetings without learning something. Really neat, knowledgeable people. It was such fun meeting you, too! I am going to list step by step how to use the semi-hydroponics soon. I just need to take pictures.

Plumiedelphia, PA(Zone 7a)

Ill try to get my photos up tomorrow
I had school tonight and last night.
I didnt realize that was a fockea!!! Oh My Gosh!!
Yah ill be doing that too by gum!
I enjoyed meeting you too Sally, you were great company. ;)
And what a terrific plant you blessed me with too. (all warm smiles here)
Youll be taking home a few plants next time we meet.
I really think you need a plumie ;p
Im absolutely dying to try the semi-hydroponics!
I have a big big adenium coming tomorrow or Thursday
I think shed like that a lot.
Anyway im ranting bla bla bla... 8D

Edited to add more ranting lol!
I took a bag full of plumeria flowers to school tonight and gave one to each of the female staff.
They all loved them, particularly the ladies from India.
They said my flowers remind them of home.. awwww..... ^^

Ok here they are
This is Adenium Obesum Beauty Cloud
I love the flower, Her graft is near perfect and she has a seed pod.
Im not so stoked about her caudex as yet, but shes young still.
I still have time to make her cry. ;p
I brought her to show off the 5 points
Caudex, graft, flower, leaf, Seedpod
I never expected to be entering a contest lolzzzzzz...
She took 3rd place
Im too absent minded at the moment to remember the category.

My Fockea Edulis took 2nd
If I knew how much this plant would enamor me I would have bought 10!
She is from the plant co-op on the cactus forum last year.
This is a very young example of the one in this photo which I believe took best of the show
http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v515/Malestrom22/Cacti%20and%20Succulents/Cactus%20Society/?action=view¤t=DSCF1097.jpg

I paid only $1.50 in the co-op for this one.
I priced around on line and shes worth around $20.- already
I need to lift her now.
The one comment I remember is 'over potted'
I on the other hand wanted the roots and caudex to spread out before swelling.
That wont happen in a smaller container so :P raspberries lol!!
Ill repot before showing next time ;)

That was a Fockea Edulis that won the show. I think I said something different before. Your adenium was in the flowering caudex group. It is great to have 2 people there to keep things straight. Your graft was amazing on that. You could bearly tell.

Plumiedelphia, PA(Zone 7a)

That wasnt my graft, but thanks ;)
I have many grafts I could show.

Bay Area, CA(Zone 9b)

Well, Malestrom, your winners are beautiful! Congrats!

Thanks for taking the time to show their pictures.

Plumiedelphia, PA(Zone 7a)

Its my pleasure. ;)

Las Cruces, NM(Zone 8a)

Wow, ribbons, good for you!!! I am not surprised.

My little Fockea edulis plants from the same co-op purchase want to know if they can come and live with you for a while (something about better treatment, I don't know, they were mumbling and pouting.)

Thanks for posting all the great photos. I am looking forward to learning more from you and Sally both!

Sally,
Enquiring minds want to know - What is the name of the big round basketball with the long dark green leaves. The leaves are hiding the name, and it's driving me nuts! Kaelkitty.

Plumiedelphia, PA(Zone 7a)

Sheri,
We still have room for more Fockea here, send em up for a visit lol!

The 'Basketball is SallyDs' baby
That is a member of the morning glory family Ipomonea.
I dont recall the specific variety name
Im sure SallyD will chime in. ;)

Yardley, PA

Hi Sherri, This is the Ipomoes Holubii. Malestrom is right that this is in the morning glory family. Almost every morning I get this beautiful purple flower and it lasts for 1 day. I am trying to catch some seeds from seed pods so that is why I have the plastic on it. I just love this plant.

After the meeting, I promptly went home and tipped my Fockea Edulis like the one at the show. The one at the meeting was 4x's as big but I loved the look.

Malestrom lucky you to be close to a wonderful society. You must have a hay day with Sally and her amazing collection.

Sally luv your I. holubii!!!! That is one that I've been wanting to find seeds for.

:) Donna

Plumiedelphia, PA(Zone 7a)

I havent see Sallys collection yet nor she mine
Someday ;)

Yardley, PA

Hi Donna, If I capture the seeds correctly, I will happily send you some. I have panty hose around them so they don't explode or just drop off.

Malestrom and I just met last month at the meeting. I am looking forward to seeing his collection and he will be more than welcome to come see mine. He has graciously invited me to his house to show me how to graft. My senior and junior have been keeping me so busy but I am going to take him up on it!!

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 4a)

Thank you, SallyD!!! That would be awesome!
