Oomposted Manure

Caldwell, NJ

I need to know ---

If I buy a few bags of composted manure to make up a hosta bed -- and work on it Wed. or Thurs night, will it "smell" like a barn in the yard on Saturday or Sunday? My husband will kill me......

If its already composted it shouldn't smell too bad.

It should have that fresh soil smell, especially if you work it into the soil.Mike

Assuming that the bagged stuff is *cow *manure, imo, I find it to be a bit "strong" in spite of being composted. Mind you, I'm a horse owner and I happen to enjoy a "barnyard" smell, so I'm a wee bit biased. Someone more sensitive to that fragrance might find it even stronger(?).

To be safe, I'd give it a few more days for the smell to disperse though...

If you are having company this weekend, I'd put off the manure. Otherwise, by the weekend, the smell will be there but less than when you first use it. It isn't awful in small quantities.

Turning it a few times will help, too - just don't moisten it until after the party!

Thanks! I WILL wait!

If I ever have a cowboy theme birthday party for my son with a pony ride (HA HA HA ) I'll know what to do first.

LOL - there ya go!
