Shady Vines

Greentown, IN(Zone 5b)

I am looking for a flowering vine that will grow in shade? Any help? I am in zone 5 and new to gardening here.

This is part of the arbour I want to grow it up over:

I'm sorry I can't help you being in the desert zone 9 but I love your garden and trellis. Good luck with your question.

I did a couple advanced searches for you in Plant Files--one for things that are good in partial to full shade, and one for light shade since I wasn't sure exactly how shady your area is. I didn't specify flowers since that would have required doing a whole bunch more searches, so you'll have to just ignore the non-flowering ones in here, but these lists should give you someplace to start. These first two searches are things that would be perennial in your zone

And this one is annuals for light shade (when I searched partial to full shade, only one or two came up so this search is more useful)

That was so nice of you!! I looked at the plants and it is what I had found also.....mornign glory...where won't that stuff grow!!! You gotta love it for its wonderful flowers but it is just so darn invasive here. So I am going to have to decline to plant it!

There are a couple clematis that will take partial shade but this is def. deep shade.

Ivy was a winner on those lists as well. Which could be an answer if i keep it trained well.

Or just have it with some pots of fern for summer hanging in wrought iron baskets. That may be the answer for my tastes.

The sunny arbour will have clematis, clematis and more clematis....I love them!!!

dove, i would suggest clematis panicula (sweet autumn clematis, goes by other names). it will grow, but probably not flower. another vine is akebia quintata (chocolate vine). it will grow anywhere and spread very rapidly. good luck!

Thanks, I have decided to wait until spring and look aroudn this winter. I have been given a list of shade tolerant vines mostly clematis on a the hosta thread and I am going to look into the clematis idea. I love that vine and it is non-invasive (mostly).

So thanks to all that have helped.
