External dvdrw drive

Hi

I recently had a fall while carrying my laptop, I thought everything was ok but I have now discovered that the optical drive is faulty, it will not install software and I cannot save or copy anything to a disc.

My question is, if I purchase an external dvdrw drive can I use this instead of the faulty internal drive.

My laptop is a Gericom Ego M510c.
