the soaker hose i have running through my containers on my deck have proved to be the best thing i could have done. i feel like a gentlemen farmer not having to go out everyday to tend to them (even though i do go out and just gaze at them LOL)
when i watered by hand i would notice the next day that the soil was hard but now i can run my fingers right through it.
i have it on a timer and it goes on for two hours each day in the early morning hours.
soaker hose is working great
Herbie, have you ever tried soaker hose in a veggie bed? I'm thinking of upgrading my current system in my raised beds (from bubblers which are horribly uneven and inefficient), and wondering what's the best way to go.
Thanks!
Herbie,
Soaker hoses are really the way to go. You'll never go back to watering by hand. As you've noticed, the hose does a much better job than you can by hand and no work for you.
I've been looking at them on line. Buying them at the local HD or Lowe's is too expensive for the amount of hose I need, but they are very reasonable in bulk on line. Right now, in this heat wave, I've been spending 3-4 hours watering everything every day. Sheesh! I don't have all my beds and gardens ready yet, but next year I'm going to be putting soaker hoses in all of them.
Jill,
If you have spaces between your raised beds, you can make your own custom soaker hoses very cheaply. You can have a soaker portion for the bed, then run a length of hose for the space, then another length for the next bed, etc. From what I've read on line, you can run a max. of 100 ft per line and up to 600 ft total at one time from your hose bib. There are two kinds of soaker hoses -- the kind that "weeps" and the one that sprays about 6-12 inches high.
