I let my purple coneflower self sow, and let as many seedlings grow as I have room for. I have been noticing how varied the individual plants seem this year, and then noticed that one of them was blooming in white flowers!
Years ago I tried to grow white coneflowers from seeds and plants, but for some reason they didn't grow. Now this one comes from nowhere!

Always the way isn't it? Love the white coneflower. By self sow do you mean just letting the blooms fade on the plant and do their thing? and if so then other plants come up? Is that what you are doing because that sounds really easy. I have heard the coneys spread a lot and I am just wondering how they do that.

Leslie - they will self sow(if cold stratified) in beds with bare soil mostly.
Caitilin - nature is full of surprises isn't it.
Yes, I mean they just do their own thing. I leave the cone heads alone all winter (for the birds and for my winter frost garden) and whatever grows from them grows. If they are in a spot I don't want them, or too many, I just cultivate the seedlings or transplant a few.
