I have several plants that are in a shady area and they are not doing well. I want to take them out and put in pots. I have a lot of top soil. Can I add any thing to that so I won't have to buy so much potting soil.

What are the plants?

Do not use top soil in pots - it just compacts and gets hard as a rock!

If you have any self-made compost and/or leaf mould, you can add that to a good quality potting soil. I agree with fancyvan, don't use top soil!

THank you and I followed your advise and just used peat, potting soil and perlite. They are doing well.
