birds I might attract in upstate NY?

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

I live in a housing tract with some mature maples, pines and lots of crab apples. I get the usual robins, finches, chickadees, cardinals, blue jays, mourning doves, nuthatch, titmouse, junco, sparrows, humming birds, an occasional woodpecker.
That's all I can think of right now, wondering what other types of birds might be in the area.
I thought I'd start with what birds are around, then see what I need to attract them.
I've seen blue birds in a nearby park, but don't think I would get them at my house.

deb, here is a list of NY birds. Of course you will not see all of them in your area since ny is big and diverse but its a start.

Have you seen any , Hawks or Turkey Vultures around?

Maybe you could google bird sites closer to your area or perhaps find some thing through the link.

I'm also sure your Library would have books you could look through for the surrounding areas.

Let us know if you need more help.

wow what a list
I do see both hawks and turkey vultures, mostly driving around - the hawks perch on the streetlights over the expressway.
Letchworth State Park is a beautiful gorge by the genesee river that the vultures fly pretty close to you

A big tractor supply company. They sell golf lawn mowers and stuff. Have you been to Watkins State Park? Another beautiful gorge.

oh yeah - we were just watching the race today, and I said it had been awhile since we've been to Watkins Glen.
and all the state parks in Ithaca!
we really have lots of good stuff here in NY
where is Mechanicville?

Cincinnati (Anderson, OH(Zone 6a)

My sister lives in Cooperstown. Is that sort of near you? She has nice birds there--but her birdwatching season is a bit different from ours...

Have you heard of Saratoga Springs? Where the horse races are. I live about 20 minutes from there. I work for NYS Parks and Recreation. Watkins Glen is one of our parks.

Of course. Saratoga Springs has a wonderful race course. My other sister used to live there! Very pretty town. I'll have to look up Mechanicville on the map. I'm sure I've driven through it.

We are planning a driving trip through New York right now--we want to go to the Hudson River Valley and see the Fall Color.
