Mangos from the pits?

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

Can you grow mangos from the pits? I recieved some mangos from a tree at my families old place in Mexico and one of the fruits had a good sized pit/stone in the middle.. can I grow this into a small tree and will it grow in a pot?

Yes and they come fairly much like the parent...dry the pit out for a few days and then cut a bit off the edge....you then gently pry it open..A bit like opening an oyster and you will find a bunch of tangled little worm like babies .....they need to be gently pulled apart
usually the biggest and healthiest is the best but who can resist planting them all. Plant in good sandy mix and a warm but sheltered place. If you are in a hurry for mangos go buy a plant while you are waiting for yours to fruit...it is fun to do though.:)
